The Science Behind Nanokeratin System

Nanokeratin System technologies are biomimetic: they are designed to emulate natural processes of the hair fibre. Each technology is developed around a specific interaction with the hair fibre and a distinct professional objective.

1. The structure of the hair fibre

A hair fibre has a protein-rich inner cortex, which gives the hair most of its strength and elasticity, and an outer cuticle of overlapping cells, which protects the fibre and influences touch, friction and light reflection. Some fibres also have a central medulla.

2. Keratin proteins

Hair is built mainly from keratin proteins. Their structure is stabilised by disulphide bonds between sulphur-containing cysteine residues, and by hydrogen bonds, ionic interactions and van der Waals forces. Each type of bond plays a different role in the hair's shape and strength.

3. Biomimicry in cosmetic innovation

Biomimicry means learning from, and emulating, structures and processes found in nature. Nanokeratin System applies this principle to hair care, designing technologies that work with the hair's own structure rather than against it.

4. Porosity, elasticity and texture

Porosity describes how easily the hair takes up and loses water and products. Elasticity describes how well it stretches and returns. Texture covers diameter, curl pattern and the shape of the fibre's cross-section. Together they determine how hair responds to a treatment.

5. Hair behaviour during professional treatments

Heat, chemical services, colouring and lightening affect the hair's bonds and cuticle. Professional selection therefore assesses elasticity, porosity, diameter, density, surface condition and treatment history, not colour alone.

6. Molecular interactions in formulations

Cosmetic ingredients can interact with the hair's surface or penetrate its outer layers, forming conditioning films, supporting fibre alignment and reducing friction between strands. Nanokeratin System describes its technologies' targeted interaction as an “enzyme-like affinity” to the hair structure. This describes the intended interaction; the products do not contain biological enzymes.

7. Specialised technologies for different hair structures

Different hair structures need different approaches. For example, Afro-Caribbean hair typically has an elliptical cross-section, while naturally blonde and repeatedly bleached hair may look alike yet behave very differently. Relaminate extends the Nanokeratin System portfolio into curl preservation, flexible lamination and advanced curl management for naturally curly and wavy hair. It is the professional system of the Nano Lamination line. Its LMN6862V flexible lamination forms a flexible, film-forming polymer coating on the hair surface, and MFCP8464 provides frizz control.

Relaminate is not a traditional perm. A chemical perm changes the hair's structure to create new curls in straight hair. Relaminate conditions the surface and laminates the curls the hair already has, preserving the natural curl pattern.
