A hair fibre is made of organised structural layers. Its outer cuticle acts as a protective surface, while the internal cortex provides much of the fibre's strength, elasticity and shape. Chemical services, heat, mechanical stress, ultraviolet exposure and environmental conditions can disturb these structures, leaving the hair rough, porous, weak, difficult to manage or inconsistent in appearance.

Hair does not biologically regenerate in the same way as living skin. However, its damaged structure can be supported, reinforced, conditioned and visibly improved through technologies developed to address both the internal fibre and its external surface.
