Sebum Accumulation and the Hair Follicle Growth Environment

Sebum is a naturally occurring lipid-rich substance produced by the sebaceous glands associated with the hair follicles. Under normal physiological conditions, sebum plays an important role in maintaining the protective lipid barrier of the scalp and supporting the condition of both the scalp and hair fibre.

However, when sebum production exceeds its natural removal, excess lipids can accumulate around the follicular opening (follicular ostium) and within the upper portion of the follicular canal.

Over time, accumulated sebum may thicken and combine with keratinised cells, dead skin cells, perspiration, environmental particles and cosmetic product residues. This can create a compact lipid-rich build-up around the follicular opening and the emerging hair shaft.

How Sebum Build-Up Can Affect the Follicular Environment

Conventional shampooing primarily removes oils and residues present on the surface of the scalp. More compact accumulation around the follicular opening, however, may not always be removed through routine cleansing alone.

As sebum, lipids and cellular residues accumulate, the microenvironment surrounding the follicular opening can become increasingly congested. This build-up may create physical resistance around the emerging hair shaft and compromise the clean, unobstructed environment in which the hair naturally emerges from the follicle.

The objective of targeted scalp treatment is therefore not simply to cleanse the visible surface of the scalp, but to address accumulated sebum and lipid-rich residues surrounding the follicular openings.

Dissolving Sebum and Cleansing the Follicular Openings

During the treatment process, accumulated oils, sebum and residues are progressively dissolved and removed from the scalp and the area surrounding the follicular openings.

As this compacted lipid build-up is broken down and removed, the follicular opening becomes cleaner and less congested, reducing the physical accumulation surrounding the emerging hair shaft.

This helps restore a cleaner and more balanced follicular microenvironment in which the hair can continue its natural emergence and growth process with less physical obstruction around the follicular opening.

Supporting the Natural Hair Growth Environment

It is important to distinguish between artificially accelerating the biological activity of the hair follicle and creating conditions that better support its normal physiological function.

The objective of scalp cleansing is not to artificially force the follicle to produce hair at an accelerated rate. Instead, it is to remove excess sebum, lipids and accumulated residues that may compromise the environment surrounding the follicular opening.

By reducing this accumulation, the treatment helps maintain a cleaner, less congested scalp environment and allows the emerging hair shaft to progress through the follicular opening under more favourable conditions.

The Principle

Sebum Accumulation → Follicular Build-Up → Congested Follicular Environment → Increased Physical Resistance Around the Emerging Hair Shaft

versus

Sebum Dissolution → Follicular Cleansing → Reduced Build-Up → Cleaner Follicular Microenvironment → Support for Natural Hair Emergence and Growth

The principle is not to create an artificial mechanism for faster hair growth, but to optimise the environment in which natural hair growth takes place.

By dissolving accumulated sebum and removing lipid-rich deposits from around the follicular openings, the scalp is restored to a cleaner and more balanced condition, allowing the hair to continue its natural growth cycle with fewer physical obstructions within its immediate follicular environment.
